This piece was made simultaneously with “Reaching for Meaning” , as a counter to my mood at the time. I wanted to paint something light and colourful.
Music once again took over, when the song “Remember Me” by Fawn Wood, Randy Wood, R. Carlos Nakai came on. I was inspired by the mountains I had already painted and the effect that mountains have on me. Their staggering size and beauty make me feel connected to a higher power and a higher peace - the same feeling that resonates within me when witnessing the dances of the First Nations people in Canada with their powerful large movements, large dress, large emotions and the statements made through them.
After I painted the dancer , I stepped back and noticed the “wings” of the dancer had taken the shape and colours of a watermelon, which is the symbol for solidarity with Palestine. At first, I thought to leave it this way would effectively be claiming solidarity on behalf of an entire culture - risky as an emerging artist. Some people might still take it that way of course, and that is okay. If one wants to think that I am purposely speaking on behalf of a community against something that is just simply wrong, that is fine with me.
I believe we can protect, cherish, and celebrate all cultures, lands, and resources. Everything is so big. There is so much of everything There is no need to share one pie. As artists we channel energies through our hands and bodies, sometimes the persons subconscious and “powers that be” take over and say something, and we must let that come through, or else, what is the point?
So my whimsical pink mountains now take the shape of something much brighter and hopeful than I imagined, and not “light” in the slightest. The Mountains of Solidarity stand with every citizen of the world against injustice, and they will stand longer than those who threaten the path to peace.
